How Should I Clean My Clear Aligners?

Teeth are an important part of a person’s personality. According to a survey conducted by the American Dental Association, a large number of people feel socially awkward due to the alignment of their teeth. The way a person’s teeth look can have a very negative impact on their lives. But there is no need to worry because all these kinds of dental deformities can be addressed just by the use of dental aligners. Let’s have a look at what teeth aligners are and how they work to make our smile beautiful.

Dental aligners are clear, tight-fitting mouthpieces that sit perfectly on our teeth. These are a modified form of traditional metal braces. Clear teeth aligners are removable. They can be worn all day and all night and can be easily removed whenever one requires them to be removed. They come in different sizes and can be custom-made for anyone who needs them. They are very light in weight and hence are comparatively less irritating than the conventional metal ones, and they are easy to install and remove as compared to those dental braces which are installed by a dentist during a lengthy procedure. These aligners are more acceptable by patients as compared to the traditional braces because these are mostly transparent as compared to the braces, which are usually silver metal in color. The conventional ones give an unnatural look, while the plastic dental aligners aren’t even noticed most of the time.

How Do Aligners Work?

The principles used by these novel aligners are similar to the conventional metal braces, but the method of application is totally different from the conventional ones. The new method does not require brackets attachment with glue but can be generally installed by anyone. Aligners basically are made according to the shape of teeth. Most good aligners are custom-made for the patient according to the patient’s needs. It is not the scenario in all cases because making custom aligners for all the patients can be costly for the patients themselves. Aligners, when placed on teeth, apply gentle pressure on your teeth and gradually move them into proper dental alignment. Patients are prescribed to wear a certain type of aligner for a week or two, after that, the cast is changed, and the new cast applies pressure in a new direction. A series of these different aligner sets are used to get your teeth in the desired place and give you a beautiful smile.

Why Do My Aligners Smell?

The material used for the aligners’ manufacture is the main culprit. Plastic is generally used for the construction of aligners. Plastic has been known to cause excessive bacterial growth and entrapment of undesirable materials in the hidden pockets of the aligners. Decreased passage of air and a good growth environment provided to the bacteria cause a boost in their replication, and leaving the aligners in place for the whole night without proper hygiene can boost bacterial colonization. This bacterial colonization has a drastic effect on your mouth’s pH, and toxins produced by bacteria lead to the formation of a bad odor in the aligners. This problem can be corrected by proper dental care. Brushing your teeth twice a day, along with proper cleaning of the aligners every time you brush your teeth, can be very helpful. Simply brushing your aligners every time you take them out of your mouth can reduce the amount of plaque build-up, reducing bacterial growth. A number of habits also promote bad odor build-up, like eating food and drinking liquids with aligners in place. This causes particles to get stuck, providing bacteria a growth boost.

How Often Should I Clean My Invisalign?

Cleaning your aligners should be a permanent habit, just like you brush your teeth. Dentists recommend rinsing your mouth twice a day, using mouthwash along with brushing your teeth. As you have to put the aligners in your mouth for the whole day, similar treatment should be done with the aligners as you do with your mouth. So clean your aligners every time you brush your teeth. This is the way of increasing the life of your aligners and making them free of bad smells. Keeping your aligners clean can also increase their appeal and can prevent the discoloration of aligners’ plastic. As the sole purpose is to increase the overall look of your face, wearing a discolored set of aligners can have a very bad impact on your overall look. The recommended method for cleaning your aligners is brushing them with a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear antibacterial soap. Gently scrub any food particles away and then rinse under cold water. Never use hot water with your trays – it can end up warping your aligners. While you’re correcting your bite, it’s super important to take care of both your mouth and your Invisalign. By keeping both clean, you’ll prevent cavities on your journey to a positively stellar smile!

Can I Soak My Invisalign In Mouthwash?

Cleaning your aligners is highly recommended, brushing them twice daily or at least once daily should be your routine. However, soaking your Invisalign in fluids like bleach or any other caustic soda can be very harmful to your aligners as well as yourself. Soaking them in mouthwash can lead to the discoloration of aligners or them getting stained by the color of your mouthwash. Doing so can easily remove all the odor-causing bacteria, but in return, you might get a funky blue or green aligners set, which, aesthetically or not, surely will make you look funny. Instead, make a habit of brushing your aligners daily and brushing your teeth along with that. Maintaining good dental hygiene and checking up with your dentist every 6 months is highly recommended.

I love this dental office! I have been coming here for years. It is a one-stop-shop! You can get your x-rays, cleaning, braces, labs, dentures, toothbrushes, and more all right here. They offer a movie room, 15 minute massages, child care, coffee, tea, and snacks! The weekends included face painting and balloon art for the kids. The staff is great, and they try to work with you if you need a payment plan. I think most insurance carriers are accepted. Never had any issues with any of the work done here!
